Looking for a tutoring Agency in Toronto?

Steps to take in finding the right tutoring agency.

finding f the right tutoring agency in toronto

It has become more and more difficult to find a good tutoring agency. Since 2007 the amount of new tutoring centres and agencies has increased by 10%. It is easy for a tutoring agency that has just opened up to look professional by hiring a marketing organization and paying for S.E.O. So it appears they are reputable from the looks of their website but are they really? What we have recently found is that some of the new owners of these tutoring agencies do not hold a teaching or education degree. Some of these agencies are run by University students or graduates who have no idea of what it means to be in a classroom other than memories they had as student.
Many clients have called us and thanking us that they finally we have someone who understands their specific concerns! That is a major problem. Would you go to a car mechanic that graduated from a history degree that decided to open up a car repair shop? Would you go to a tutoring agency that is run by university students?

Tips on finding the right tutoring agency.

1. How long have they been in business? Typically they should be in the business for at least 5 years. Otherwise you may be wasting your time with that agency as they are green to the business and you may encounter many initial problems along the way as you become their guinea pig. Many of these new tutoring agencies do not continue operating after their first year, as soon realize it that it is time consuming for the amount of profit they are gaining. How to check on an agency on-line  You simply can go on http://whois.net/ and find out when their website was created. Chances are is the date they created their website is a ballpark figure of the date they started their tutoring agency. Although there are exceptions.   Agencies or companies that started in the 90’s most probably did not have a website until some time after the millennium which was called the .com boom.

2. Rock bottom prices. You can notice that an agency just began by their rock bottom promotions. For example if the agency offers you a rate of $23 per hour or $35/per hour and a half, then chances are that this agency is desperate in luring you as a customer. These are just introductory rates that last a few hours and then have you purchase more hours at a substantially higher rate. Reputable agencies would not lure you into this low price schemes.

3. Who are you speaking to? Are you speaking to a certified teacher / educator? If they are not a teacher or administrator they should not be assisting your child. Not to mention would you want someone who does not have the knowledge of the current education system to hire a tutor for your child?

4. Avoid agencies that send you to a booking database. A tutor booking database may be convenient but that really limits the ability to find a good match with your child. Some tutoring agencies do not even take the time to set you up with a tutor. They ask for your money upfront and then ask you to go on their tutor database. This is a very poor technique especially if you have a child with specific needs. Not only that you have really no choice in their selection of tutors. In addition to that. That tutor may be fully booked. Choose an agency that carefully selects the tutor they are going to match with your child. A good tutoring agency will carefully listen to you and set you with an appropriate tutor from the inventory of tutors that they had personally hired.

5. Avoid On-line programs. On-line programs are specifically meant for really difficult courses such 4th year university quantum physics where a local tutor would be difficult to find. A good on-line tutoring program has costs associated with it. For the same hourly rate you can get a tutor that goes to your home.  It is just not worth it.

Do not be in a rush to buy a Tutoring Franchise

Thinking of Buying an In-Home Tutoring Franchise. Think Again!

pros and cons of owning a tutoring franchise

You many end up with an empty wallet if you purchase the wrong tutoring franchise.

I am not trying to dissuade you in anyway. But I have been a manager for 3 tutoring agencies in the past 20 years. Don’t make the mistake my friend did and bought a tutoring franchise in a rush.  Although they say that tutoring is recession proof.  It is not the recession you have to be worrying about, but the amount of competitors in the industry.  Since 2007 there have been numerous tutoring business start-ups.  This is what happens when an industry is not regulated. It has become so unregulated that we are seeing very young entrepreneurs open up a business who have never stepped into a classroom other than being a student themselves.

Government officials have been thinking about regulating the tutoring industry similar to current daycare regulations, as we are seeing more an more tutoring agencies open up who are in direct care of children.  Currently with childcare if you have more than 5 students who have to register your agency with the government.  They are also thinking about regulating who owns the agencies.  For now it stands that anyone can open up a tutoring agency. Should the owner have a minimum certification such as a teaching or education degree?

Opening up a tutoring business is not as easy as it sounds.  You have to hire an accountant, a marketer  a human resource specialist. And don’t forget you may also have to troubleshoot customer complaints, teachers that leave in the middle due to a job propositions etc..

Opening up a franchise in the year 2000 when there were not many competitors and you can pick and choose the best geographic location, is not the same as opening up a tutoring franchise now with in 2013 with the large amount of competitors we are seeing. You wind up paying 15-20 grand alone on marketing! Not to mention an average of  a 30K start up fee an 8% loyalty fee on top of that.  Trust me, do not do what my friend did and winded up 60K in the whole the first year only to make 10K the following year.  So he decided to pack it up and sold his franchise for 15K just to get out of it.

Whoever is selling you a tutoring franchise in Canada is not telling you the reality behind owning a tutoring franchise in the year 2013. In addition you are buying a very small  and most likely not popular geographical area. That is really not worth it as the competition has increased ten fold since the glory days of buying a tutoring franchise in the year 2000.

1. With so many other new competitors popping up every month or so it is getting more difficult to make the income the Franchisor is telling you without spending 15-30 K on advertising.

2. Owning a tutoring franchise in a smaill geographical area means that another franchisee may be in turf war with you.  Who is to stop them from advertising in your location on-line or physically. The Franchisor is definitely not.

3. It all sounds great to own a tutoring franchise but you have to give it some thought  as other competitors have already accessed your location and have planted the seed so to speak.   In reality your Franchisor is making money of you buying their name! And not from the royalty fees you will be giving them.

I would stick to buying a brick and motor franchise.  This way you know that your location cannot be compromised by other competitors as you clearly establish the no compete guidelines with the landlord who is renting the space out for you in the mall or office.

How to delete your main title from your WordPress pages and posts.

Deleting main title from wordpress pages and posts

I am sure you have stumbled upon the fact that WordPress uses you main title in combinations with your post title and pages.  I was searching for days when I found out how to do this by trial and error.

1. First Install All in One- S.E.O .  I am sure other S.E.O W.P. plugins work but I have not tried it.

2. Go to Settings on Dashboard and Click General.  Delete Title and Tagline (If you are using a program that uses the WP title on your page/post you may just have to find another program or theme such as weaver 2 or weaver 2 pro.  )

3. Go to Settings All -in -One -SEO and make sure that you have a title.

That’s it! Now Google should be reading your post and page titles the way you typed them.  Just make sure you scroll each page and type in the title, description, and keywords on the SEO all in one form.

Considering a Tutoring Franchise

Buying A Tutoring Franchise?

buying a tutoring franchise

Buying a Tutoring Franchise is not as easy as we think.

Are you considering a tutoring franchise.  If you are please do your research carefully.  Now a days the competition for tutoring is harsh.  Ever since 2007 tutoring companies and agencies have erupted and the agencies currently out there are facing tough competition. I suggest you do your homework because you may be investing a lot of time and money for very little results. The only survivors out there are the agencies that have had their roots in the ground for a long time and therefore word of mouth keeps their business’ booming.

Agencies and tutoring franchises are popping up like we have never seen before.  It is easy to say that you can own a tutoring business but it is much harder to run a tutoring business efficiently.  Many learn the hard way and shut down within a year or two of opening their tutoring business. How do I know this.  One of my friends opened a tutoring franchise and got burned because she thought that it would be easy.   I also know this because I am the manager for Tutors For Less Toronto and I don’t even work full time and my job is tough. You have to be a jack of all trades to run an agency efficiently.  And this is considering they are an established tutoring agency.  Now imagine all that hard work with a tutoring agency or territory that you just started.  It won’t be easy that is for sure!

I was considering buying a tutoring franchise at one point but I did my research properly. What I can’t fathom is that their are some tutoring franchises that offer small territories in big cities for a hefty franchise fee.   When their is stiff competition out there if you are franchising for a small territory then it is not worth your effort, money, or time. Add to this a recession where tutoring is becoming more of a luxury for a lot of families.

Not only will you be paying your franchise fee but you may be adding about 15 – 30 K in advertising  website creation, marketing etc..  This is not a Tim Horton’s franchise where you buy any location  and “the people will come” type of franchise.  Their is a lot of money and time invested into getting your tutoring franchise to be successful.  This is especially true if your franchise does not even have a branded name to begin with.

The wise thing to do is to own a franchise in a territory that is not hit by stiff competition.  Otherwise if you purchase a franchise in a popular city or municipality you may be facing fierce competition.  That goes for any franchises out there.  Not only will you face competition from your competitors. You will also face competition from your franchisees who may want to dip their advertising  into your territory.  This holds especially true for any home based tutoring franchises. What if your competitor advertised at your local community arena. They have a full right to do so even though this is your territory.  It is unconventional but is legal.

Consider a Brick and Mortar tutoring franchise.  This way you pick the location and you can make sure there is no other competition in the plaza or mall.

Unless you love education.  Consider a franchise that you would enjoy doing and involves less stiff competition   Consider purchasing a franchise that is unique and at the same time enjoyable for you to work with.

Good luck and choose wisely when you are purchasing a franchise.

Finding Tutors in Toronto

Finding Tutors In Toronto

finding tutors in toronto

Finding a tutor in Toronto can be a daunting task for many parents.  Since 2007 the amount of tutoring agencies and tutoring centres has rocketed. With so many agencies to choose from it is no wonder parents have to make a difficult choice of finding a  tutor in Toronto.

Some agencies offer free assessments as a sales ploy to reel you in to buying their tutoring package hours.  These tutoring packages can range from 20 to 100 hours.  Parents think that this agency that has just conducted a 1 hour assessment in their home must be professional.  In reality what you just did was invited and trusted a sales person who might not even be a certified teacher to assess your child on what their academic needs are in less than 1 hour.

Many parent’s get fooled into thinking they are going to receive a “FREE ACADEMIC ASSESSMENT“.  When in fact that agency is just using that useless paper assessment as a ploy to allow a salesperson to come into your home to sign on the dotted line to purchase their tutoring packages.

This would be similar to a generic heating company that wears a reflective vest, hard hat and has a clipboard in their  hand and knock on your door indicating they would like to check your water heater or furnace.  They look professional. They are talking the talk and letting you know that your water heater or furnace can become more efficient if you sign on the dotted line.   They look like their are doing their job but they are not from an established heating agency like direct energy.

What parents don’t realize is the best tool to use is your child’s current or past teacher.  They see your child 5 days a week. Hence, the teacher has the key to unlocking your child’s true academic potential.  Your child’s teacher will come up with the best action plan.  A 1 hour assessment from a salesperson is not going to be an accurate assessment of their strengths and needs.   A school psychologist is the only education professional that has been trained to genuinely assess your child academically.  Other than that you are wasting your time and your money.

Some parents have also done their research with tutoring centres in Toronto.  These tutoring centres in Toronto are usually located in a mall or a plaza.  These centres may sound good initially but what parents don’t realize is these tutoring centres in Toronto are conducting group centred tutoring.  That means your child will be placed with 2 to 5 other children in a group and that ultimately means your child is not receiving the full attention from their tutor.  Not to mention these other students might not even be at the same grade level.  Adding $5 to $10 per hour for 1 on 1 in home tutoring is no comparison. It is very obvious that your child will be achieving their academic potential at faster pace than conventional group centred tutoring offered at tutoring centres in Toronto.

Tutoring Agencies that guarantee Results

What those agencies did not tell you is that you have to purchase 40 or more hours for them to guarantee results.  That amounts to 10 months of tutoring.  Any teacher can tell you that your child will improve in his knowledge and ability within a school year. With Tutors For Less 1 on 1 home tutoring you  always see some improvement in a students knowledge and ability to grasp the subject matter.  However, At Tutors 4 Less we do not offer any misleading improvement guarantees.

Unlike other tutoring agencies, we don’t see the need to make false or misleading score improvement guarantees. This is because we trust in our tutors’ results, our affordable rates, and our wide selection of professional educators. We work hard for your satisfaction, that is why most clients continue tutoring services with Tutors 4 Less.

We choose not to make long-term score or grade improvement guarantees because we respect our clients and know, as you do, that while we can easily refund your money, no tutoring service can ever truly guarantee its students’ success.

Tutoring agencies that offer this guarantees never truly intend to honour these guarantees, and they are full of fine print and exceptions anyway, just the like the health insurance policies, cell phone protection plans, and other types of contracts, these agencies are just trying to fool you out of your money.

At Tutors 4 less, we pride ourselves on our honest customer service, and thus do not want to ever associate ourselves with false guarantees that fool you into wasting your time and money.

Tutoring Agencies that have cheaper rates.

There are only three reasons why a tutoring agency may have cheaper rates. One of the reasons is that the agency is not established and are desperate to for your business. Sooner or later this agency is going to find out that they would need to hire less than mediocre tutors to teach your child and will soon run their agency to the ground with the number of complaints they would get from their clients.

The other reason parents don’t realize is that the agency may have quoted you a cheaper rate because you are going to lock into purchasing a bulk number of tutoring hours.  For example we have seen parents purchase 100 prepaid hours with another tutoring agency only to discover they did not like the tutor and there is no refund with that agency.

The last reason may be the tutor they are selecting for you. That agency may be hiding that from you.  They may be sending you a university student to tutor your child reading skills that should be taught by a certified teacher. Or they may be sending you a Mathematics major to tackle on a chemistry assignment.   At Tutors For Less we do not hide anything we let you know that our rates only change depending on the qualification of the tutor.  Our clients realize that hiring a certified teacher will change the hourly rate substantially compared with a university student.

At Tutors For less – Toronto, we make sure that our tutors work with your child’s teacher to make sure they are getting the proper assistance your child’s teacher recommends.  We offer a wide variety of tutoring packages to suit your tutoring requests at very affordable rates.  We have the lowest Rates in the City. Our tutors teach all subjects and grades. You can’t get better home tutoring anywhere.

Choosing A Tutoring Agency

Choosing A Tutoring Agency

tutoring centres - tutoring agencies

Parents have the daunting task of finding the right tutor for their child. They call many agencies and find out the lowest rate for professional In home tutoring.  The problem is since 2007 the amount of tutoring agencies out there has quadrupled in amount.  The choice is really what you are looking for.  Are you looking for group learning situations whereby your child is situated with other students in a small group.  Then perhaps Sylvan learning or Oxford learning would best suit your needs. Are you looking for your child to become self learner, then a Kumon centre would most likely suit your child’s needs.

Or are you looking for an In home tutoring agency whereby the tutor goes to your home to teach your child remedial or enrichment skills in the comfort of your own home?

Now the confusing part.  The parent is left to choose which agency is the best for their child.  There is really no right answer here. Different agencies have different approaches to grab you as their customer.

Some agencies insist on an assessment and free consultation. They scheduled a visit to your home to conduct what the call an assessment.  Then they say they will work on an “action plan”.  What they did not tell you is the assessment they are using is just a way to get them in your front door.  This way because you have invited them into your house you feel obligated to sign up because you think they have wasted their time on assessing your child.  The looked very professional in administering their paper assessment that they must know what they are doing.  “THIS IS WRONG ASSUMPTION”

What they also did not tell you is that an educational assessment should only be conducted by a person trained in assessing children.  That would be your educational psychologist.

Their so called “action plan” based on their 30 minute assessment is useless because what your child need to focus on is the gaps they are missing in their current school year.   “Your child’s teacher and your child’s report card is the best action plan for your child.

Buying A Tutoring Franchise

tutoring franchise

Buying a tutoring franchise can be a big mistake for some.  One of my friends made that mistake and bought a tutoring franchise thinking that they can earn top dollar quickly.  Firstly, this depends on the type of tutoring franchise.  Is it a location based franchise or are you buying a franchise with a territory.  If it is a location based tutoring franchise than you may have better luck. All you have to do is  choose a good location and buy the franchise.  This would be a good buy if the location is ideal.

The problem my friend made was buying an In-home tutoring franchise.   This involved buying a specific sub-city or municipality location such at Toronto- Richmond Hill region.  The problem in paying 25 to 50 K for a small region like that is that you are most likely going to get into turf wars with other franchisees.  That is exactly what happened to my college.  He purchased a region realizing that he had to spend over 15K in advertising for his specific region just to make 30K.  Not only that, he realized that the other franchisees wanted to cross turfs just to make a few extra coins by advertising on classified ads in the turf they were not assigned to.  So what did he do he took a 75K loss and decided to go back to the workforce.

So if you are planning on purchasing a tutoring franchise make sure you have purchased a good and vast location.  a subdivision for 25K is not going to cut it and you are probably going to have to cut your losses and run.  My Collegue mentioned it would have been more worth it if his boundry was larger and more vast.  For example if he had Markham, Thornhill, and Richmondhill,  it may have been worthwhile.  Other than than he felt that the franchise owners were conducting a pyramid scheme of owing a tutoring franchise.  They sell small chunks and make a quick 25 to 50 K while you are left with advertising between 15 to 40 k for such a small region that they give you. This is really difficult since 2007 the amount of tutoring agencies to compete with has grown substantially.

EQAO VS School Grades Who is wrong the school or the government

I was shocked when my son received his EQAO scores.  His current teacher shortchanged him in his term marks and was unable to prove herself.  We voiced our concern to the the principal and superintendent to be only brushed off by them.  Then his EQAO scores came and they were far off from his term marks to the point they were two full grades above his term marks.  Where do you go from here? I am sure there are many parents out there that have experienced the same hardships only to find out that the school is not out there to protect the children. They are there to protect their teachers even if they know that they are 100% wrong.
